Longer School Day, Less Vacations?

Alright - this conversation sparked some serious interest in class, with some passionate responses. As part of his overall plan, President Obama and his Education Secretary Arne Duncan want to make some radical changes to the school year.  In an effort to "turn the country's education" around, the plan is to add an additional 300 school hours per year to the school calendar.  Considering our school day is from 8:45 to 3:30, or 6 hours 45 minutes, that would mean an additional 10 or so weeks of school - or lengthen the school day.  See more here:

So, what do you think? Good plan, bad plan?

  1. I don't think that we should have more school days or longer school days because I don't want to spend all day at school and I want to be able to go home at 3:30. Not go home at like 6:30 at night!I think it's a bad idea.

  5. In a way i also think its a bad idea cause we the students dont really have a say in this!!!! it would be fair if the teachers & state school places ask us if we wanted to do this. Some kids cant handle long school days and years!!!

  6. Wow..sounds like people have interesting ideas about this!

As a teacher, i feel conflicted. I always want my students to do the best possible job, and if a longer school day means better students, then I am all for it.

However, as I brag about my family, I do want to spend time with him. I know often teachers are seen as people that work part time, and are done by 3:30. Well, as I see, that is hardly the case at Elmer. I know there are few days that I leave before 5:00, and I know there are many teachers on the Third Floor that are the same. So, what time would I leave if the school day were longer? 7:00?? I'd never see Liam!
